Three writers whose books I have read more than once and one whose books I probably will read again:

John le Carre, i
n my opinion, is one of the finest writers of the last 40 years, if not the finest. The Smiley Trilogy is one of my greatest reading experiences.

Tony Hillerman, who also worked for UPI, was a wonderful man and phenomenal writer, a national treasure.

C.S. Forester made me want to be a Naval officer, but my "lazy" eye prevented it.  When I was a kid I thought Hornblower was everything a man should be.

Alan Furst is the master of the historical atmospheric espionage novel. He has taken me to places I otherwise never could experienced and left vivid images in my mind.
A LIGHT NOT OF THIS WORLD

About Dan Riker

I am a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Baltimore School of Law.  My wife, Jan, and I live in Columbia, MD. We have a daughter, Cary, who lives in Portland, OR with her husband, Christopher.

I never intended to have just one career. There just are too many interesting things in life to concentrate on only one. So, I was a journalist with United Press International, a telecommunications executive with MCI and Pocket Communications, and a bookseller (Basset Books LLC).  I also had some experience in university public relations with Johns Hopkins and media relations in the office of the Governor of Maryland. From time to time I have done some business consulting, usually writing, or analyzing business plans. Even though I was admitted to the Bar in Maryland, I never practiced law.

My only hobby now is following baseball, specifically the Boston Red Sox. I used to be a serious amateur winemaker and hope to resume that at some point.

This is my first novel. I have started work on another.
